How a Basic Wind & Solar System Works

How it Works

How it Works

#1 Direct current travels from your wind turbine and solar array to the charge controller which is required to keep the batteries from over charging.

#2  The battery bank is the carry-over power storage.  It must store excess electricity for use when there is no wind or sun.

#3  The inverter converts the stored energy into 120 volts AC (just like from the power company) to run AC power loads.

#4  The light bulb represents an AC load.  It might be a furnace fan, a television, a computer, or your household lights.

Note – DC loads such as small lights, radios and small appliances made for recreational vehicles may be operated without the need for an inverter.

About Electrical Requirements
You may simply attach an extension cord to the inverter to run power where needed.  An electrician will be required if you would like to connect the system into your fuse box/electrical control panel for direct, hard wired household use.

Towers and Poles
A tower will be needed for most wind turbine applications.
The higher the tower the less turbulence and the more efficient your turbine will be.  Towers come in many heights and are also a great place to attach your solar panels for a combination system.  Many of our wind turbine systems are on towers of 30 – 40′.  Guy wires may or may not be necessary depending on your application.

Can I hook up a well pump to operate on solar power??? If so, what is labor & costs involved? Lena

    • Teri Leigh Baird Admin says:

Yes, Lena, you may hook up a well pump to operate on solar power.
There are a number of considerations – horsepower of your pump, depth of well, water level, etc. Please look at http://gladewinds.com/energy-evaluation/ and then copy and paste the form into an e-mail to info@gladewinds.com and answer the applicable questions.
The cost and labor varies depending on your needs. You may also give Michael a call to discuss a bit further 417-209-3227.
